Case Study: Chesterfield County's Central Library Hosts a Competitive FRC Team
Most competitive robotics teams launch inside a single high school with a dedicated shop class and a captive roster. Chesterfield County's Central Library took the opposite approach: build a team around a public makerspace and recruit students whose schools had no team to join.
A Team Built to Fill a Gap
Isotope FRC 9709 launched at Central Library's Makerspace in 2023 specifically to give students without a school-based option a way to compete in the FIRST Robotics Competition. The name is a nod to the science itself: isotopes are atoms of the same element with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons. In the 2025-2026 season, the roster included 13 students drawn from Monacan, Clover Hill, and Midlothian high schools, plus one homeschooled student. That cross-district reach is exactly the kind of outcome a school-hosted team cannot easily produce, and it maps directly to a public library's mandate to serve residents regardless of where they are enrolled. The Makerspace as Build Shop
FRC robots are industrial in scale, which usually means a school metal shop or a sponsor's warehouse. Central Library's Makerspace substitutes for both. Team members use the drill press, miter saw, and band saw for structural fabrication, the 3D printers for custom brackets and prototypes, the Glowforge laser cutter for panels and signage, and the sewing equipment for team apparel and pit décor. Access is free, which meaningfully lowers the barrier for a rookie community team facing a season budget that can start near $15,000 and climb toward $50,000 for veteran programs,2 on top of a registration fee in the $6,300 to $6,500 range.38
The mentor structure is split deliberately. Technical mentors, several of whom competed on high school robotics teams themselves, handle engineering and controls guidance. A separate group of business mentors, drawn largely from parents, runs fundraising, purchasing, and event logistics. Library staff (Terron, Josh, Hannah, and branch manager Jennifer) provide facility support and program continuity.
Why FRC and FTC Coexist Under One Roof
Central Library also hosts the LibraryBots, which compete in the FIRST Tech Challenge. The two programs are complementary rather than redundant. FTC serves grades 7 through 12, caps teams at 15 with 8 to 12 typical,45 uses modular robots on a smaller field, and carries a registration fee around $295 with a kit near $1,2004 and first-year budgets often between $1,800 and $2,250.56 FRC serves grades 9 through 12, runs 10 to 20 students (up to 50),7 and requires the larger workshop footprint the Makerspace provides. Hosting both lets the library route a middle schooler into FTC and graduate that same student into FRC without leaving the building.
